Latonya Reeves Announces Congressional Run at The B Suite in Downtown Minneapolis
In a powerful display of community spirit and unity, Latonya Reeves, a respected labor leader and DFL Party activist, officially announced her candidacy for Congress at The B Suite, a prominent Black-owned business in downtown Minneapolis. With a campaign slogan that resonates deeply, “It’s time for change,” Reeves gathered an enthusiastic crowd of community leaders, activists, and supporters from across Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District (CD-5).
Reeves, widely recognized as one of the most qualified and powerful African American women in the state, brings an extraordinary record of leadership and service to her campaign. Her resume is a testament to her dedication and impact: she currently serves as an elected DNC Representative, Community Probation Officer, Commissioner of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission, Vice President of AFSCME Council 5, President of AFSCME Local 552 (Probation & Parole), Hubert H. Humphrey Policy Fellow, NAACP Executive Member on the Political Action Committee, and Chair & Commissioner of the Minneapolis Community Commission on Police Oversight. Each of these roles underscores her deep commitment to justice, equity, and community empowerment.
During her announcement, Reeves delivered a unifying speech promising to be the candidate of change who represents all cities and constituents of CD-5. She made it clear that her campaign is about building bridges, amplifying community voices, and ensuring that every resident is represented in Congress.
A highlight of her speech was her unwavering commitment to economic advancement for the disenfranchised people of CD-5. Reeves boldly addressed the reality that Minnesota has some of the worst economic disparities in the nation, particularly for African American communities. She vowed to make it her mission in Congress to tackle these inequities head-on, championing policies that create real opportunities and close the gap for those who have been left behind.
Reeves also made it clear that she will not stand by as hard-won civil rights are threatened. She passionately vowed to fight back against President Trumps attempts—to roll back the civil rights gains that generations of African Americans have struggled to achieve. Reeves promised to be a steadfast defender of justice and equality, ensuring that progress is not only protected but advanced for all.
The event was attended by prominent figures in the African American community, including Angela Dawson, a well-known Black Farmer and Cannabis Advocate in Minnesota. Dawson spoke passionately to the crowd, praising Latonya for being a fierce advocate who opens doors for her community to be heard and valued.
Latonya Reeves’ campaign is rooted in her extensive experience in organized labor, criminal justice reform, and community engagement. Reeves is recognized for her commitment to reducing disparities and building a more inclusive and just society.
As the energy in the room made clear, Latonya Reeves is not just running for office—she is running to inspire, to unite, and to lead real change for all voters in CD-5. With the support of community leaders and a vision for a better future, Reeves stands as a formidable candidate ready to represent and uplift every voice in her district.
